LEAD MECHANICAL ENGINEEER -- MACHINE DESIGN
LEAD MECHANICAL ENGINEEER -- MACHINE DESIGN
Location : San Jose, CA We are a full-service global engineering solutions provider with an immediate need for a senior mechanical engineer with experience in machine design and/or automation engineering. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical design of industrial manufacturing machinery, pneumatic mechanisms, and electro-mechanical drives (induction motors, controllers, chain drives, etc.)and continuous media handling; solid working knowledge of mechanical tolerances and fits; working knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, metal forming, welding, brazing; working knowledge of engineering materials such as various grades of carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels and aluminum alloys; applications of Unistrut and "80/20" structural members; proper application of finishes and corrosion protection; and good understanding of fundamental mechanical engineering principles including solid mechanics, heat transfer, and mechanisms; and, solid working knowledge of engineering documentation (primarily drawings and BOMs). A strictly rigorous, methodical approach and utmost attention to detail is of paramount importance. Skill in effectively and efficiently direct the efforts of offshore and local CAD designers and drafters is critically important. While your role will not be primarily that of a CAD designer, you will need familiarity and the ability to work with 3D solid modeling. Solidworks experience is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have a BSME or higher degree and 4 - 6 years of direct product design experience in industrial capital equipment production line machinery, with lead engineering responsibility for complete machine/equipment designs. You will be working with others on your projects, but as the engineering lead you must be comfortable with project-level responsibility for accuracy, technical, schedule and budget performance. You must be a self-starter, have a strong work ethic and positive attitude, take your performance personally, and have the skill and energy to do what it takes to achieve high-quality, on-schedule results. Excellent communication skills are necessary. This position involves significant contact with Customer engineering personnel. Analysis experience (FEA) is not strictly necessary but is a plus. You should be able to conduct typical engineering hand calculations (stress, deflection, tolerance stack, heat transfer, etc) to support normal design work. Exceptional engineers having skills and experience in the areas noted above but not specifically from the machine design industry will be considered. However, this position is not for anyone without a strong and broad background in mechanical engineering
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you,

Open letter to CDI students - changes and challenges
Open letter to CDI students - changes and challenges due to budget cuts

Open letter to CDI students - changes and challenges due to budget cuts CDI students,In the Winter term classes were canceled 3 weeks before opening day. CDI lost 4 classes because of low enrollment. Many of you were "shocked" that the classes were not available when you showed up the first day and wanted to add. Because of CA budget cuts, CDI has already scheduled 6 less CAD classes than normal for the Spring 2012. If you want and need a CAD class please register on the date you are allowed. Register. Do not wait. The administration will cut classes by March 27th that are not filled with 20+ students. Remember to sign up for CDI 101-106 labs for all day and evening access and to support the program. Spring term schedule is show below. Sumner classes will be similar to other years unless the budget gets worse. In Fall 2012 CDI will move to a temporary site because due to the remodeling of the ATC facility that we have occupied since 1994. CDI will be assigned only ONE room for the following two years. And when we return we will only have one room in the ATC on the second floor. Between CDI's mandatory contraction because of budget cuts we will also have to contend with scheduling only one room at a time. We hope that Distance Learning classes can pick up some of the slack- but budget cuts will now determine our program size. Though this seems bad at first glance we have always found a way to cover your CAD training needs and will continue to find innovative mechanisms to provide CAD education. At one time we had 4 rooms and now we have 2- but our enrollment has gone up. We will shrink permanently starting in the Fall term-but we will find ways of opening classes to everyone who needs and wishes to learn the CAD systems we have. Note that almost all Bay Area CAD programs have closed in the last 5 years.
It is highly unlikely we will be able to schedule all of our traditional offerings multiple times. NX and CATIA may not be available during this period. So, if you want NX please sign up for it Spring term. Note that CATIA was canceled Dec 27th Winter term due to lack of enrollment. If you want to meet with me (or ask questions) about your program so as to map out a path through these change please email me at [email protected]. No calls please. Also feel free to ask Max and Paul and all of our faculty about your program and the CDI department changes. I do not think many of you understand how much effort has gone into maintaining, keeping, sustaining, and evolving the CDI department (by all of us) in the face of unbelievable resistance and outright antagonism from the college and administration over the last 30 years that I have been at De Anza. We have our supporters and friends but it has been an exhausting process. On a personal note, this is my 41st year teaching engineering graphics and 45th year in the field. I am still enthused by the design process- thanks to 3D CAD design (I started with pen and ink!). I hope to be here for many years to come, especially since I seem to have a unique way of keeping the administration from offering only poetry classes and other high-tech- high-job growth programs (smile please). CDI has always met the local design industry's CAD needs and will continue to do so in the future with your support. Lastly- please join us for the CAD department's 29th CAD Event and job fair on March 27th. Thank you for your interest and support in the past, Gary, Paul and Max Department: CAD and Digital Imaging (new window)
